Gauteng is all geared up to welcome world leaders for the G20 Leaders’ Summit, with Premier Panyaza Lesufi confidently stating that the province stands prepared to host this major global event. The summit, set for 22 to 23 November 2025 at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg, will see heads of state from the world’s top economies gather to discuss key issues like economic growth and sustainability. Lesufi shared a detailed plan during a media briefing on Tuesday, 4 November 2025, covering everything from reliable power supply to cleaner streets and strong security measures. These steps not only aim to impress visitors but also promise lasting benefits for local residents and businesses.
This preparation comes at a crucial time for South Africa, as it wraps up its G20 presidency under the theme “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability”. With the eyes of the world on Johannesburg, Lesufi’s team has worked hard to fix infrastructure, boost safety, and spruce up public spaces. The focus on long-term gains means these upgrades will stick around well after the summit, helping Gauteng attract more investment and improve daily life for its people.

Robust Energy Plan to Avoid Disruptions

One of the biggest worries for any big event is power cuts, but Lesufi assured that Gauteng has a solid setup to keep the lights on. “A comprehensive and resilient energy plan is now in place to secure uninterrupted power supply for the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit but also for the overall energy supply to residents and businesses in our province,” he said.
The plan covers key spots like the OR Tambo International Airport, the International Convention Centre (ICC), and major hotels. All main electrification work for important routes and areas is done, with just a few small tasks left to wrap up soon. To make it foolproof, there are backup layers like emergency generators, high mast solar lights, and better cable protection.
Working hand-in-hand with Eskom, the province will keep a close watch on energy levels. “We have monitored the energy power at OR Tambo International Airport, the ICC and key hotels so that during the summit and beyond, we don’t have energy challenges that can disrupt the flow of visitors in our province,” Lesufi added. This integrated approach also includes making things look nicer and safer, showing how the summit prep is lifting the whole area.

Beautification Drive: Cleaning Up Johannesburg and Beyond

Gauteng is getting a fresh look ahead of the summit, with intense clean-up efforts across public spaces, especially in the Johannesburg CBD. Teams are cutting grass, picking up litter, and clearing illegal dumps to make the city shine. New street furniture and bins have popped up in busy spots, including the Cradle of Humankind – a UNESCO World Heritage site expected to draw extra tourists during the event.
“We have rehabilitated streetlights in almost all major routes. We have enhanced safety and furthermore, we have developed and strengthened all our recycling stations so that all of them can be operational,” the Premier explained. Potholes have been filled, and street lights and signals restored along key paths, making travel smoother and safer.
These changes are not just for show – Lesufi vowed they will last beyond the summit. “We dare not drop the ball — Gauteng must stay clean, safe, and ready to host global events. Infrastructure upgrades are nearly complete, and we’re working together to attract investment,” he said. This beautification push ties into broader goals of making the province more appealing for business and visitors long-term.

Heightened Security: A Multi-Agency Shield for Delegates

Safety comes first, and Gauteng has pulled out all stops to protect everyone during the summit. Lesufi highlighted that law enforcement is fully ready, with plans coordinated across agencies. “Gauteng is well equipped to ensure a safe and secure environment for all participants and our residents. The South African Police Service [SAPS], in full coordination with all other law enforcement agencies, has robust plans in place that we have all adopted and accepted,” he said.
Delegates will get escorts from a joint team including SAPS, National Traffic Police, Gauteng Provincial Traffic, and metro police from across the province. Main entry points like airports and borders are on high alert, with faster security checks and logistics to make arrivals and departures seamless.
To handle any surprises, a provincial disaster management centre is primed for action. “A comprehensive multiagency command centre has been established – integrating all emergency services, law enforcement and essential service providers to facilitate real-time coordination and rapid response,” Lesufi noted. With staff placed strategically and top tech for monitoring, the centre can tackle medical issues, security threats, or other hiccups quickly.
Gauteng’s traffic plan includes better coordination among metro police and clear info on road closures, ensuring minimal hassle for locals while keeping things secure.

A Warm Welcome: Showcasing Gauteng’s Vibrancy

Lesufi wrapped up by expressing pride in handing over a ready province to the national government. “As we prepare to handover this province to national government, we do so with immense pride and confidence that Gauteng is ready. We have worked as one, we have delivered on our commitments and we are prepared to offer the world a warm and exceptionally unique experience about our province. Gauteng is ready, zwakala. Let’s make this an experience that we’ll all love,” he said.
The summit is a big chance for Gauteng to shine, showing off its energy, culture, and business potential. With upgrades like filled potholes, restored lights, and cleaner spaces, the province is not just hosting – it is building a legacy. These efforts, backed by close work with Eskom and law enforcement, aim to make the event smooth and memorable, while leaving lasting improvements for residents.
As the countdown to 22 November ticks on, Gauteng’s leaders are calling on everyone to join in welcoming guests with open arms. This global spotlight could bring more tourists and investors, helping grow the economy and create jobs. With everything in place, the province is poised to make South Africa proud on the world stage.
