Gauteng Police Seek 30 Suspects in Violent ATM Bombing at Hammanskraal’s Jubilee Mall

ATM Bombing

Gauteng police have launched an extensive manhunt for approximately 30 suspects involved in a brazen attack on Jubilee Mall in Hammanskraal, Tshwane, during the early hours of Sunday, 16 March 2025. The assailants targeted five FNB automated teller machines (ATMs) and a drop safe within one of the mall’s shops, resulting in a violent shootout that left a security officer wounded.

Incident Details

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the incident began when a security guard conducting routine patrols outside Jubilee Mall was accosted by a group of armed men driving a bakkie. The suspects robbed him of his firearm before proceeding into the shopping mall, where they confronted a second security officer, seizing his cellphone. The assailants then detonated explosives on five ATMs and breached a shop to bomb its drop safe.

Shootout and Injuries

As the suspects attempted to flee the scene, they encountered responding police officers and private security personnel, leading to an exchange of gunfire. During the shootout, one security officer sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. No arrests have been made thus far, and authorities are actively pursuing the suspects. The exact amount of money stolen from the ATMs and the shop remains undisclosed.

Official Statements

Lieutenant Colonel Masondo confirmed the ongoing investigation, stating: “No arrests have been made thus far, and police are still on the lookout for the suspects. It cannot be confirmed at this stage how much money was taken from the ATMs and the shop.”

Mall Response

In response to the incident, Jubilee Mall management issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to safety: “We are working closely with law enforcement to investigate the incident. We want to assure you that we take incidents like this very seriously and are taking immediate action to enhance security measures throughout the mall.” The mall has temporarily closed some shops while others remain operational, ensuring the safety and well-being of customers, tenants, and employees.

Community Impact

The audacious nature of this crime has raised concerns among Hammanskraal residents and the broader Tshwane community. Such incidents not only threaten public safety but also disrupt local businesses and erode the sense of security within the community.

Call for Public Assistance

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward. Community members with relevant details are encouraged to contact the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111 or provide information anonymously via the MySAPS app. Public cooperation is vital in apprehending the suspects and preventing future occurrences of such violent crimes.

This incident is part of a concerning trend of ATM bombings in South Africa. In the past year, there have been multiple reports of similar attacks across various provinces, indicating a possible rise in organized criminal activities targeting financial institutions. The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) has noted an uptick in such incidents, urging banks and security companies to enhance protective measures.

Law Enforcement Measures

In response to the increasing frequency of ATM bombings, law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to combat these crimes. Specialized units have been established to investigate and prevent such incidents, focusing on intelligence gathering and collaboration with private security firms. Despite these efforts, the recent attack in Hammanskraal underscores the challenges authorities face in curbing this form of organized crime.

Community Vigilance

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, especially around financial institutions and shopping centers. Community policing forums are encouraged to engage with local law enforcement to develop strategies aimed at enhancing neighborhood security. Collective vigilance and proactive measures are essential in deterring criminal activities and ensuring community safety.
