Gauteng Police Operation Closes 12 Unlicensed Liquor Outlets and Arrests Over 800 Suspects

Gauteng Police Operation

This past weekend, Gauteng police carried out a high-density crime prevention operation that resulted in over 800 arrests across the province. The large-scale operation, which ran from Friday, 27 September to Sunday, 29 September 2024, saw law enforcement officials intensifying their efforts to ensure that communities in the province are safe. Gauteng police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, emphasised that these operations are part of the ongoing strategy to “squeeze the space for criminals” in the province.

The extensive efforts by the police, which included tracing wanted suspects, conducting roadblocks, raiding unlicensed liquor outlets, and performing stop-and-search operations, have led to the arrest of individuals involved in various serious crimes. The list of offences includes rape, murder, assault, housebreaking, theft, armed robbery, fraud, sexual assault, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Johannesburg District: Over 190 Suspects Arrested

In Johannesburg alone, 196 suspects were taken into custody over the weekend, according to Masondo. These arrests were part of an integrated high-density operation led by the Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Gauteng, Major General Fred Kekana. The operation included a notable roadblock set up in Honeydew on the evening of Saturday, 28 September 2024.

This roadblock resulted in 63 arrests for illegal immigration, eight arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol, three for possession of drugs, and one for fraud. Additionally, 12 unlicensed liquor outlets were shut down. Lieutenant Colonel Masondo confirmed that this collaborative effort is one of many ongoing initiatives to curb criminal activity and protect the people of Gauteng.

Province-Wide Crackdown: Hundreds of Arrests in Other Districts

In addition to the arrests made in Johannesburg, similar operations were conducted across the other districts in Gauteng. According to Lieutenant Colonel Masondo, 238 suspects were arrested in the Tshwane District, 150 in Ekurhuleni, 77 in the West Rand, and 63 in Sedibeng.

These suspects were detained for a variety of serious crimes, and the police reported that many of the individuals were previously wanted for violent crimes or repeat offences. The police, in coordination with various other law enforcement agencies, used intelligence-driven operations to identify hotspots and target individuals and areas with high crime rates.

Operation Squeeze: An Ongoing Commitment to Community Safety

The Gauteng Police’s “Operation Squeeze” is a critical component of their crime prevention strategy, and it shows no signs of slowing down. Lieutenant Colonel Masondo highlighted that these efforts are part of a broader campaign to create an environment where criminals have fewer opportunities to operate. “Our goal is not only to arrest these criminals but to ensure that they no longer have the space to commit crimes. We are working hard to ensure that the people of Gauteng are and feel safe,” Masondo stated.

He further stressed that the closure of unlicensed liquor outlets is a vital aspect of reducing crime in local communities. These outlets often serve as hotspots for illegal activities, including drug dealing, assault, and public disturbances. By shutting them down, the police aim to eliminate these breeding grounds for criminal behaviour.

Illegal Immigration: A Growing Concern in Gauteng

The issue of illegal immigration was a significant focus during the weekend’s operations, with 63 individuals arrested for being undocumented. This aspect of crime control is becoming increasingly important as local authorities work to address the challenges posed by unregulated migration, particularly when it comes to maintaining public safety.

Illegal immigration in Gauteng has been linked to various criminal activities, including drug trafficking, human trafficking, and fraud. The arrests made during the operation will likely lead to further investigations into the networks and groups involved in these activities. The police have vowed to continue their efforts to address illegal immigration as part of a broader strategy to reduce organised crime in the province.

Drunk Driving and Substance Abuse: A Target for Law Enforcement

Among the 800+ arrests made over the weekend, a significant number were for offences related to alcohol and drugs. The police arrested eight individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol, a growing concern in Gauteng, particularly in urban areas like Johannesburg and Tshwane.

The dangers of drunk driving are well-known, and the Gauteng police are actively working to clamp down on this issue by increasing roadblocks and conducting breathalyser tests at key locations across the province. Lieutenant Colonel Masondo reiterated that “driving under the influence not only endangers the lives of the individuals involved but also poses a threat to innocent bystanders and other road users.”

Three additional arrests were made for drug possession during the Honeydew roadblock, underscoring the police’s commitment to tackling substance abuse and the illegal drug trade in Gauteng.

Community Impact: A Stronger Partnership Between Police and Residents

The success of this high-density crime prevention operation is not only attributed to the efforts of the police but also to the cooperation of the community. Residents of Gauteng have become increasingly engaged in efforts to make their neighbourhoods safer by reporting suspicious activities and working with law enforcement to track down criminals.

Lieutenant Colonel Masondo expressed gratitude to the community for their ongoing support, saying, “Our operations are more effective when the community is involved. The people of Gauteng have shown that they will not tolerate crime, and they are playing an active role in helping us combat it.”

As the police continue to strengthen these partnerships, there is hope that future operations will be even more effective in reducing crime and maintaining public safety.

Following the arrests made during the weekend operation, Lieutenant Colonel Masondo confirmed that several suspects have already been processed and released after paying fines. These suspects, who were mostly detained for minor offences, were allowed to pay admission of guilt fines, while others are expected to appear before various Magistrate Courts across Gauteng from Monday, 31 September 2024.
