Gauteng Police Dismantle Multi-Million Rand Drug Laboratory in Alberton; Eight Suspects Arrested
ALBERTON – Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni has praised the members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) for their exceptional work in dismantling an elaborate underground drug laboratory in Alberton. The operation, which took place on Friday, led to the arrest of eight suspects.
Successful Intelligence and Strategic Planning
On 28 May 2024, Johannesburg K9 unit members received credible information pointing to a suspected drug laboratory operating in Alberton. Acting on this tip-off, the police closely monitored the premises over several days and verified that illegal activities were indeed taking place.
Collaboration for a Seamless Operation
The Johannesburg K9 unit, having confirmed the suspicions, sought the assistance of the National Counter Narcotics unit. They obtained a search warrant from the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, ensuring all legal protocols were observed.
On Friday at around 10:00 AM, a joint operation including the Johannesburg K9 and National Counter Narcotics units carried out the search warrant. Upon entering the premises, the team discovered large quantities of precursor chemicals used for drug manufacturing, alongside drug-making equipment and significant amounts of drugs.
Meticulous Execution and Caution
Following the initial discovery, the police prudently withdrew from the premises and summoned Forensic Crime Scene Management, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, and the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority to conduct a detailed examination and secure evidence.
The operation concluded with the arrest of eight suspects who were present at the scene. They are now facing multiple charges, including dealing in drugs and violating the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act, Act 140 of 1992.
Impact and Commendation
Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni lauded the team’s diligence, patience, and precise execution of the search warrant. “This discovery and subsequent arrest of these alleged drug dealers and traffickers will have a positive impact on the streets of Gauteng. These suspects’ criminal dealings have been disrupted, and we have definitely hit them hard in the pockets,” Mthombeni stated.
