Gauteng Police’s multidisciplinary Operation Vala Umgodi led to the arrest of thirty-three foreign nationals during raids in Germiston and Primrose, Ekurhuleni. The apprehended individuals are suspected to be part of illegal mining activities in the region. The two-day operation, which took place on Wednesday, 19 March, and Thursday, 20 March 2024, also resulted in the confiscation of an array of mining equipment and an unlicensed firearm.
Police spokesperson Lt Col Mavela Masondo praised the operation for its effectiveness. “The integrated Operation Vala Umgodi, consisting of various law enforcement agencies that include South African Police Service and South African National Defence Force, is yielding positive results in Gauteng,” Masondo stated.
The police successfully dismantled the illegal mining sites and seized tools utilized in the unlawful extraction of minerals. Among the items seized were 05 Pendukas, 05 shovels, 01 pik, 03 stampers, and 09 crush pots—critical tools in the illegal miners’ operations. The authorities further recovered 25 bottles of white vinegar, 08 packets of salt, 01 water pump, 01 battery, 02 drill machines, 03 saws, 02 hammers, 01 spanner, and 27 bags containing gold-bearing soil, evidence of the extensive underground network that has been targeted by law enforcement.
Lt Col Masondo highlighted the discovery of weaponry amongst the tools: “The police recovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition during the operation.”
