Operation Safer Festive Season
The Gauteng police have started Operation Safer Festive Season with a bang, making significant arrests and recovering illegal firearms. In a recent operation, they apprehended more than 140 suspects and seized rifles, including an AK-47, from a man believed to be a kingpin in the illegal mining trade in the West Rand.
The operation began when the police received information about a suspect allegedly in possession of unlicensed firearms in Bekkersdal, West Rand District. Taking immediate action, the police executed a search warrant on the day of Operation Safer Festive Season. A joint effort by Crime Intelligence and Bekkersdal Visible Policing led to the discovery of two illegal firearms, an R5 rifle, and an AK-47 rifle, along with dagga.
The suspect, a 36-year-old individual, was promptly arrested for unlawful possession of firearms and dealing in dagga. This successful arrest showcases the police’s commitment to ensuring the safety of the community by removing dangerous weapons from the hands of criminals.
In addition to this impressive feat, detectives were also able to track down and apprehend 56 wanted suspects involved in various crimes like rape and fraud. These arrests highlight the meticulous investigative work undertaken by the police to bring criminals to justice and provide closure to victims.
Meanwhile, top-ranking officials, including Minister of Police General Bheki Cele and National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, joined the police at a roadblock and an illegal mining disruptive operation in Roodepoort. The operation resulted in the arrest of over 85 suspects involved in crimes such as possession of suspected stolen goods and contravention of the Immigration Act.
Apart from the arrests, the police seized generators and drilling machines used by the illegal miners, disrupting their operations significantly. This decisive action sends a clear message that illegal activities, such as mining, will not be tolerated, and law enforcement agencies will crackdown on these criminal enterprises.
