Gauteng police have arrested one suspect following a shooting incident in Midrand on Tuesday afternoon, where gunmen opened fire on two vehicles transporting taxi bosses. The attack occurred at the intersection of Olifantsfontein and Lever Road, leaving two taxi owners and two bystanders injured.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo, the taxi owners were returning from a meeting and were under the protection of security officers when their vehicles came under fire. A shootout ensued between the security officers and the attackers. During the altercation, one of the suspects was left behind by his accomplices as they fled the scene. The police quickly responded and managed to apprehend the suspect, who was found in possession of an AK-47 magazine.
The injured individuals, including the two taxi bosses and bystanders—a street vendor and a motorist—were promptly taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Authorities have opened a case of attempted murder and are actively searching for the remaining suspects involved in the attack.
The arrested suspect is expected to appear in court soon, as police continue their manhunt for the other perpetrators. The incident underscores the ongoing violence and security challenges within the taxi industry, which has seen similar violent incidents in the past
