Gauteng Police
By Thobeka Makume
On Tuesday, 7 January 2025, Gauteng police arrested five suspected illegal miners following a shootout in Dawn Park, Boksburg. Officers were on patrol when they received reports of illegal miners allegedly robbing residents in the Lindelani Informal Settlement. Upon arrival, community members directed the police to the suspects, who were actively engaged in illegal mining activities. As the officers approached, the suspects opened fire, prompting a shootout. The police successfully apprehended five individuals and recovered two unlicensed firearms along with more than ten rounds of ammunition. The suspects are expected to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges including attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Recent Incidents of Illegal Mining in Boksburg
This incident is part of a broader pattern of illegal mining activities in the Boksburg area. In November 2024, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) arrested eight undocumented foreign nationals aged between 23 and 35 for illegal mining in Villa Lisa. The suspects, primarily from Malawi, Lesotho, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe, were apprehended following a tip-off about illegal mining activities at a plot in Villa Lisa. Their mining equipment was confiscated, and they faced charges of illegal mining and being in the country illegally.
Additionally, in September 2022, five suspected illegal miners were arrested following a shootout with police in Boksburg. The suspects were found in possession of a shotgun, ammunition, and mining equipment. Two of the suspects were wounded during the shootout. The arrested individuals were also being investigated for potential links to other violent crimes in the area.
Impact of Illegal Mining in Gauteng
Illegal mining, often associated with individuals known as “zama zamas,” poses significant challenges in Gauteng. These activities are linked to various criminal acts, including violent crimes, environmental degradation, and economic losses. The Gauteng Department of Community Safety has expressed concern over the threat illegal mining poses to the peace and stability of communities. Incidents of violence, such as shootouts between rival gangs of illegal miners, have been reported, contributing to a spike in murder cases in the province.
Law Enforcement Efforts
Law enforcement agencies have intensified operations to combat illegal mining. In November 2024, coordinated efforts led to the arrest of 12 suspected illegal miners in the Reiger Park policing precinct. The suspects had their mining equipment confiscated and faced charges related to illegal mining and being in the country illegally. These operations are part of the government’s mission to eradicate illegal mining activities and mitigate their adverse impact on economic development and community safety.
