Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport
The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has recently launched a state-of-the-art Panel Beating and Apprenticeship Training Workshop, aiming to benefit graduates, informal businesses, and entrepreneurs in the automotive industry.
The workshop, located in Johannesburg, will offer full cycle panel beating services for all vehicles managed by the g-FleeT Management, a Trading Entity of the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport.
Sifiso Mhlongo, the Director of Fleet Maintenance Unit at g-FleeT Management, emphasized the importance of the new workshop. Historically, the department has outsourced accident repairs through the RT46 Transversal Contract by the National Treasury of South Africa. This process has often been costly and time-consuming, affecting the quality of fleet, turnaround times, and customer satisfaction.
The main objective of the new Panel Beating Workshop is to bring control over the entire value chain of accident repairs, ultimately leading to improved cost control, quality of repairs, and the self-sustainability of g-FleeT. By having an in-house panel beating facility that adheres to manufacturer-approved criteria and the industry’s standards, the department can ensure top-notch repairs.
In addition to the improved cost control and quality of repairs, the workshop also aims to contribute to skills development and training in the automotive industry. It has a built-in Training Facility for technical training and skills development, helping g-FleeT contribute to the development of critical and scarce technical skills in the country. The workshop plans to obtain industry accreditations from the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), South African Motor Body Repairers’ Association (SAMBRA), and Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services SETA (MERSETA).
To operationalize the workshop, g-FleeT has partnered with the Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC), a subsidiary of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency. AIDC specializes in both Automotive Hub establishment and Technical Skills Development, making them an ideal partner for the project. Their expertise will ensure the successful implementation of the workshop and the training of necessary skills.
