Gauteng Launches Innovative Points Person of the Future Programme to Enhance Traffic Management and Road Safety
Johannesburg – The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has rolled out the groundbreaking Points Person of the Future Programme, a fresh initiative set to transform how traffic flows and safety is handled across the province. Launched on Thursday, 20 November 2025, the programme brings in skilled traffic points personnel armed with modern tools like body cameras and digital reporting systems to cut down response times and keep commuters safer. MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela led the event, stressing the vital role these workers play in saving lives and warning that any vandalism or theft at intersections will face strict action. This step forward comes through a key partnership with Monasi Traffic Controlling, showing how teamwork can make roads better for everyone.
In a time when busy streets often lead to jams and accidents, this programme offers real hope for smoother drives and fewer risks. By blending tech with on-the-ground know-how, Gauteng aims to set an example for smarter transport in South Africa.

Cutting-Edge Tools for Better Traffic Control
At the heart of the Points Person of the Future Programme is a team of traffic points personnel ready to step in where needed most. These workers will use body cameras to record their actions, making sure everything is clear and fair. Digital reporting tools will let them log issues fast, speeding up fixes for things like broken lights or crashes.
The programme targets high-traffic spots across Gauteng, where delays and dangers are common. By placing these points people at key points, the department hopes to ease bottlenecks and guide drivers better during peak hours or events. This not only helps with flow but also cuts down on road rage and mishaps that come from confusion.
MEC Diale-Tlabela made it clear that keeping these spots safe is key. She warned against any harm to equipment or theft, saying such acts hurt everyone by slowing down help. Her strong stand shows the province’s zero-tolerance for anything that puts lives at risk.
MEC’s Inspiring Message to the New Team
Speaking at the launch, Diale-Tlabela gave a boost to the new points personnel, urging them to keep growing their skills. “It’s important to continue developing yourselves, developing your skills. This is to jack you up, but also this is contribution to the people of Gauteng and to the whole country because being there on the road in your colours can assist someone to arrive home alive. So, your job is quite critical. You are very important to us. We are happy with this partnership,” she said.
Her words highlight how these roles go beyond just directing cars – they are about saving lives and making sure families get home safe. By wearing bright uniforms and using tech, these workers become a visible sign of care on the roads, helping drivers feel more secure.
The MEC’s focus on growth ties into broader goals for Gauteng, where better transport means stronger growth and happier people. This programme fits right in, showing how small changes can lead to big wins for all.
Strong Partnership with Monasi Traffic Controlling Drives Success
The department’s tie-up with Monasi Traffic Controlling is a big part of what makes this programme work. This private partner brings know-how in managing traffic and using tech to keep things smooth. Together, they plan to train and place points personnel where they can make the most difference, like busy crossings or event spots.
This teamwork shows how public and private groups can join forces for the greater good. Monasi’s role in providing tools and support ensures the programme starts strong and stays effective over time. For Gauteng, this means fewer hold-ups, safer trips, and a model that other provinces might follow.
