The Health Department warns of an increase in Flu cases

Gauteng Health MEC Advocates for Flu Vaccinations and Hand Hygiene as Cold Season Approaches

Gauteng’s Health and Wellness MEC, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, has issued a call to action for residents, particularly urging those most vulnerable to influenza, to ensure they are vaccinated against the flu. This proactive step towards public health, highlighted amid the observation of World Hand Hygiene Day, underscores the dual emphasis on vaccination and hand cleanliness as pivotal measures in disease prevention.

Nkomo-Ralehoko’s appeal specifically targets groups at higher risk of serious flu complications, including adults over 65, individuals with chronic heart or lung conditions, and those living with HIV and tuberculosis, in addition to pregnant individuals. “Getting vaccinated is a safe and effective way to protect yourself and those around you from influenza,” she remarked, urging eligible populations to seek out flu shots from public clinics and healthcare providers without delay.

The timing of this health initiative coincides with the global community’s focus on World Hand Hygiene Day on 5 May, casting the spotlight on the essential role of hand cleanliness in stopping the transmission of infectious diseases. Celebrated under the theme of promoting education and capacity building among health and care workers on infection control and hand hygiene, this year’s observance aims to instill robust practices that curb the dispersal of pathogens.

Underlining the significance of fidelity to hand hygiene, Nkomo-Ralehoko noted, “It is critical that health and care workers and the public at large make hand hygiene a non-negotiable routine in their daily lives as a simple, yet powerful tool to safeguard their wellbeing.” Such habits are vital, she added, not only in warding off respiratory infections but in staving off other contagious diseases, as evidenced by the instrumental role of handwashing in the containment strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic and recent cholera outbreaks.
