Gauteng Health Department
JOHANNESBURG – The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) proudly announced the appointment of three Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) to helm provincial academic hospitals, aiming to add robustness to the department’s governance and management systems. The appointees will take charge of the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital (DGMAH), Steve Biko Academic Hospital (SBAH), and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH), stepping into their objectives on the first of March this year.
“Their expertise and strategic vision will play a vital role in advancing our healthcare system, promoting equity, and improving access to quality healthcare services for all,” articulated MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, acknowledging the challenge and importance of these roles in driving the mandate to deliver premium healthcare services.
As the trio of CEOs—CHBAH’s Dr Nthabiseng Makgana, SBAH’s Dr Lehlohonolo Majake, and DGMAH’s Dr Fhatuwani Mbara—settle into their posts, there is an air of expectancy within the healthcare sector. With Nkomo-Ralehoko extending her congratulations, she underscored the weight of the responsibility that lies with these newly minted leaders, stating: “These positions carry a great responsibility in ensuring the delivery of excellent healthcare services to the people of Gauteng.”
Academic hospitals are not just an integral part of the public healthcare ecosystem due to their specialised services, but also due to their pivotal role in shaping the subsequent wave of healthcare professionals through significant medical education, research, and patient care.
This development is particularly timely as GDoH gears up for the impending rollout of the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme. “As we ready ourselves for the implementation of the NHI, it is imperative that we have capable leaders at the helm of our academic hospitals,” remarked the MEC, underlining the significant stages of preparation the healthcare system is undertaking.
Furthermore, in an extended move to fortify the department, high-calibre professionals have been appointed in other pivotal roles—including the Deputy Director-General and Chief Director of Infrastructure, the Chief Information Officer, the Chief Director for Health Economics and Finance, and a cadre of additional senior management services employees at a director level.
“These key positions will contribute to accelerating the delivery of services to communities and to strengthening the healthcare system in Gauteng,” concluded the MEC, indicating a period of transformative leadership aimed at reshaping health services delivery in the province.
The anticipation for the NHI, which has received an allocation exceeding R1 billion, remains a central focus, reiterating the ambition for equitable healthcare that scales quality and reach.
