Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane
By Mpho Moloi
Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, has announced an extension of the application deadline for the 2025 Online Admissions for Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners. The new deadline has been set for Wednesday, 14 August 2024. This decision follows a system outage on 10 August 2024, which left many parents struggling to upload the necessary documents and complete their applications.
Technical Glitch and Resolution
The online admissions system, which opened on 11 July 2024, experienced a significant technical issue on 10 August, preventing parents from accessing the platform and finalising their submissions. MEC Chiloane assured the public that the technical issues have been resolved, and the system is now fully operational. He expressed understanding of the parents’ frustration and extended the deadline to accommodate those who were affected by the outage.
“We understand the concerns of parents who were unable to submit their applications due to the system downtime. To ensure fairness, we have extended the deadline to 14 August. This will allow all parents to complete their applications without any further issues,” Chiloane stated.
Warning for Late or Incomplete Applications
MEC Chiloane also issued a warning to parents who have yet to complete their applications. He cautioned that late or incomplete submissions could result in their children being placed at any available school, rather than at their preferred choices. To avoid this, parents are encouraged to finalise their applications and upload all required documents promptly.
“The Gauteng public education system is growing, as evidenced by the 11,991 additional applications we have received compared to the previous academic year. We anticipate further growth due to the additional two days provided for application completion,” Chiloane added.
Important Dates and Procedures
The original application window was scheduled to close on 12 August 2024. However, with the extension, parents now have until 14 August to submit their applications. The deadline for submitting all required documents has been extended to 21 August 2024, at 12 noon. This extension gives parents additional time to ensure that their applications are complete and compliant.
Guidance for Parents
Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education, reiterated the importance of applying on time. He assured parents that as long as they apply online and within the extended deadline, their children are guaranteed placement in a school for the 2025 academic year. Mabona also emphasized that parents must select a minimum of three and a maximum of five schools during the application process.
For parents who do not have access to internet services, the department has established 80 centres across Gauteng, where they can apply without incurring any charges. Mabona highlighted that the online application process has been significantly improved and is now more user-friendly, addressing previous issues of system downtime caused by high volumes of applications.
Required Documents for Application
To successfully complete the online application, parents must submit the following documents:
• South African ID or passport (for the parent) and birth certificate or passport (for the child)
• Refugee permit, asylum seeker permit, or permanent residence permit, if applicable
• Study permit, if applicable
• Proof of home address and work address
• Latest Grade 7 school report (for Grade 8 applicants)
• Clinic card or immunisation report (for Grade 1 applicants)
Conclusion
As the new application deadline approaches, parents are urged to take advantage of the extension and ensure that all required documentation is submitted. The Gauteng Department of Education remains committed to providing a seamless and efficient online admissions process, ensuring that every learner is placed in a school for the upcoming academic year.
