Carletonville – The Gauteng Premier, David Makhura has publicly announced this morning that his province is now facing the third wave of Covid-19.

“Having seen over 1000 cases a day we cannot afford to close down the province’s economy but definitely we want to see an increase in restrictions,” said Makhura.

The Emfuleni Local Municipality, which is one of three local municipalities comprising the Sedibeng District in the province, has seen a spike in the number of new Covid-19 cases during the last three weeks.

This follows a concern by health experts indicating that case numbers are approaching the third wave threshold. It has been reported, in the last few weeks that the number of new Covid-19 cases is increasing at the alarming rate in Emfuleni on the Vaal.

The region in the Vaal has two universities, namely North West University (NWU) and Vaal University of Technology (VUT), including TVET colleges.

Speaking at West Rand District Municipality in Carletonville official opening of a refurbished mining hospital, Makhura has warned against shutting down the economy.

The leader of the Gauteng Command Council, Makhura has opened a 181 bedded newly renovated and refurbished AngloGold Ashanti Hospital in Carletonville.

The department of health has announced over 3 000 new Covid-19 cases, with a total of 44 more deaths, take South Africa’s Covid-19 death toll 55 012.
