Rainfall
By Mpho Moloi
Gauteng province is currently experiencing heavy rainfall and severe weather conditions, prompting Emergency Management Services (EMS) to remain on high alert. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings for potential disruptive rain and flooding across various parts of the province throughout the week.
Weather Warnings and Expected Conditions
In the City of Johannesburg, SAWS has issued a Yellow Level 5 warning for disruptive rain, indicating a significant risk of flooding. Residents are advised to exercise caution, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. The forecast for Johannesburg includes persistent rainfall and thunderstorms over the next few days.
Similarly, the City of Tshwane is under a Yellow Level 4 warning for disruptive rain. Localized flooding is anticipated, particularly in low-lying regions, informal settlements, and susceptible roadways. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
EMS Preparedness and Response
Johannesburg’s EMS has activated Disaster Management Monitoring teams across all seven regions, focusing on vulnerable communities, especially informal settlements. The Aquatic Rescue Unit is on high alert, and all fire stations are fully operational to respond to emergencies. EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi emphasized the readiness of the teams:
“We are ready to respond to any emergencies, and residents are urged to call the Emergency Services Call Centre at 011 375 5911 for any life-threatening situations.”
In Tshwane, the Emergency Services Department (ESD) is closely monitoring the weather and maintaining a high level of readiness. Spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni highlighted the potential dangers associated with the severe weather, including the risk of severe lightning strikes that could cause fires. Mnguni also cautioned that some communities might become temporarily inaccessible due to flooding:
“We urge residents to stay indoors, avoid metal objects which may attract lightning, and refrain from outdoor activities like fishing or golfing during the rain.”
Impact on Infrastructure and Services
The heavy rainfall has already begun to impact infrastructure and services in the region. City Power, responsible for electricity supply in Johannesburg, reported that its operations have been affected by the adverse weather conditions. Flooded roads and damaged infrastructure have led to numerous power outages across the city. City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena noted that thousands of calls have been logged regarding power disruptions:
“The South African Weather Services has issued a Level 5 warning for sustained heavy rainfalls, which could affect our operations, resulting in delayed response to outage calls.”
Residents are advised to be patient as repair teams work to restore services amidst challenging conditions.
Safety Precautions and Recommendations
Given the current and forecasted weather conditions, residents across Gauteng are strongly encouraged to:
• Stay Informed: Regularly monitor weather forecasts and heed warnings issued by SAWS and other credible sources.
• Exercise Caution on Roads: Avoid driving on flooded roads or crossing low-lying bridges. If travel is necessary, maintain a safe following distance and reduce speed.
• Avoid Outdoor Activities: Refrain from outdoor activities, especially those that involve water bodies or open fields, to minimize the risk of lightning strikes.
• Secure Property: Ensure that drainage systems are clear, and secure any loose items that could be displaced by heavy winds or water.
• Prepare for Emergencies: Keep emergency contact numbers handy and have an emergency kit ready, including essentials like water, non-perishable food, and medical supplies.
