Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane orders independent investigation into Alberview learner’s death, with the department finalising the appointment of a law firm to probe the tragic incident at the Alberton school. The Grade 3 boy passed away after sustaining an injury on the school field, prompting calls for accountability and enhanced safety measures.

Tragic Loss Sparks Urgent Probe into School Incident

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is finalising the process of appointing an independent investigative law firm to probe the tragic death of a Grade 3 boy learner from Alberview Primary School, in Alberton, Ekurhuleni. In a statement issued today by GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona, the department outlined steps to uncover the facts behind the heartbreaking event that has left a family and school community in mourning.

It is alleged that the learner passed away at hospital on Friday, 1 August 2025, after sustaining an injury at the school field that morning. The independent investigation will probe circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. Reports indicate the boy was hurt during playtime, with paramedics rushing him to a medical facility where he was sadly declared dead. The exact nature of the injury remains unclear, but it has raised questions about supervision and safety protocols during school breaks.

Alberview Primary School, a public institution serving the Alberton area, has chosen not to comment on the matter, deferring to the ongoing official processes. This silence has added to the distress felt by parents and locals, who are seeking clear answers on how such a tragedy could occur on school grounds.

Support Measures and Community Response

Our Psycho-Social Support Unit was deployed to the school to provide necessary support for all who were affected by the incident. This includes counselling for learners, teachers, and staff who witnessed or were impacted by the event. The deployment aims to help the school community cope with the loss and prevent long-term emotional harm.

The family and all stakeholders will be engaged once the GDE has the independent investigative law firm onboard for necessary introductions and outlining of terms of reference accordingly. This step ensures transparency and allows those closest to the boy to contribute to the probe, potentially shedding light on any overlooked details.

The incident has drawn widespread condolences, including from nearby institutions like Jeppe High School for Girls, which expressed deep sadness over the loss. Community members in Alberton have voiced concerns about child safety in schools, calling for stronger measures to protect young learners during active play.

MEC Chiloane’s Commitment to Accountability

“We express our deepest condolences to family, his school community, and all who knew him. In our pursuit of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our learners across all schools, we expect this investigation to provide detailed facts around this incident. We are hopeful that this investigation will uncover the facts behind the learner’s passing, ensuring accountability,” said MEC Chiloane.

Chiloane’s order for an independent probe underscores the department’s dedication to impartiality, especially in cases involving vulnerable children. The law firm will examine everything from the sequence of events on the field to emergency response times and school policies on supervision. This approach is meant to build trust and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
