Tembisa, a township located in the north of Kempton Park, has emerged as a hub of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The GDE aims to further enhance the local economy by empowering learners to identify challenges in the community and find innovative solutions for them. The department emphasizes that learners should focus on serving the needs of the local community, particularly those in close proximity to the school.

The Engineering School of Specialisation in Tembisa has a specific focus on the manufacturing of industrial equipment. Being situated in the Eastern Economic Development Corridor, the school is strategically located to connect with the main industries in the area, namely manufacturing, transport, and logistics. The department envisions partnerships with relevant companies in these industries, offering learners excursions and opportunities for skills development.

To achieve this, the school plans to collaborate with companies like Barloworld Equipment in Isando, which specializes in earthmoving equipment, industrial services, and power systems. Learners will be given access to the company’s simulators to learn how to operate the industrial equipment they will be producing. They will also have the opportunity to visit Barloworld Equipment’s workshop and witness the manufacturing processes firsthand. The school holidays will provide learners with the chance to engage in job shadowing at this company.

MEC Matome Chiloane believes that partnerships with companies like Barloworld Equipment are key to ensuring that learners receive hands-on experience and develop the necessary skills to succeed in the field. Chiloane expressed excitement and pride in establishing schools that equip learners with invaluable future skills. The GDE aims to launch a total of 36 schools of specialisation in Gauteng to ensure a bright future for education in the province.

The Engineering School of Specialisation in Tembisa represents the GDE’s commitment to providing quality education that aligns with the needs of the local economy. By focusing on manufacturing industrial equipment, learners will gain practical skills and contribute to the growth and development of their community. This forward-thinking approach to education not only empowers learners but also strengthens the local economy.
