The Gauteng Department of Education announced that they have successfully placed 81,033 Grade 1 learners and 65,726 Grade 8 learners for the upcoming 2024 academic year. The latest online admissions placement progress report, released on September 10, 2023, revealed these numbers.

The online admissions placement period for 2024 started on September 4, 2023, and will continue until all learners are placed. The department reported that the placement process ran smoothly during the first week, from September 4 to September 7, 2023.

While the department is pleased to report that 46.09% of applicants, totaling 141,036, have accepted placement offers as of September 7, 2023, they expressed concern over the 71,775 parents who have yet to respond to the offers. The department emphasized that this lack of response is significantly slowing down the placement progress, as the spaces are reserved for only seven days and cannot be released to other applicants from the same school.

Parents were reminded that they have two options to choose from after receiving offers: “accept placement offers as final” or “accept placement offers while awaiting additional offers within seven school days.” Applicants who do not accept offers within seven school days will be automatically placed at the school with a placement offer closest to their home address.

The department further emphasized that the applicants’ placement is determined according to regulated admissions criteria, such as proximity to the school, sibling attendance, and previous school within the feeder zone. Once all applicants in these categories are placed, offers will be released to applicants in other categories in the order outlined until each school reaches its capacity.

Parents with incomplete applications were informed that they can select a school with available space starting from December 11, 2023, provided they submit the necessary documents and valid proof of residence.

The department urged parents to regularly check their cell phones for placement offers or login to their profiles on www.gdeadmissions.gov.za to view and accept offers. For those without internet access, they are encouraged to visit schools, districts, or the head office in person for assistance, or call the department’s helpline at 0800 000 789.

The department assured parents with complete applications and no placement offers to remain calm, as offers are being issued on a daily basis until all applicants are successfully placed. They emphasized the ongoing nature of the placement process and urged applicants to carefully review and consider placement offers to avoid any errors.

Parents and guardians were advised to remain patient if they have not yet received placement offers and to regularly check the status of their applications on www.gdeadmissions.gov.za.
