Futurelife's New Manufacturing Facility Paves the Way for Economic Growth in KZN

FUTURELIFE

The recent investment of R75 million by South African health foods manufacturer, Futurelife, in a new manufacturing facility at the Dube Trade Port Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has sparked hope for a better future for the province of KwaZulu-Natal, according to the province’s Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs MEC, Siboniso Duma.

Futurelife's New Manufacturing Facility Paves the Way for Economic Growth in KZN

The state-of-the-art factory in Dube TradePort, located near the King Shaka International Airport, is expected to boost Futurelife’s production processes, resulting in enhanced efficiency and adherence to international standards.

By acquiring advanced machinery and equipment, the manufacturing facility aims to streamline operations and contribute to sustainable economic development in KwaZulu-Natal.

Duma, who officiated the opening, stressed the pivotal role that this factory will play in stimulating the manufacturing industry and increasing employment opportunities in the province.

With a focus on nurturing the local community and economy, Duma highlighted the factory’s potential for future upstream integration, as it already sources 87% of its raw materials locally. This move gives local producers a competitive advantage as Futurelife expands into regional and international markets.

Formerly based in Pinetown for 14 years, Futurelife was fully acquired by PepsiCo South Africa in 2023. According to Mark Bunn, PepsiCo South Africa’s Commercial Vice President and former Managing Director of Futurelife, the new facility demonstrates the company’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of South Africans.

Bunn also emphasized the company’s dedication to giving back to the community that has been instrumental in its success. With its strong roots in KwaZulu-Natal, Futurelife aims to create an additional 24 direct jobs within the next five years and expand 30% of its business to export markets in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, North America, and the rest of Africa.

The investment by Futurelife in the Dube Trade Port SEZ is not only significant for the company but also serves as an endorsement for the SEZ as an attractive investment destination in South Africa.

Hamish Erskine, CEO of Dube Trade Port SEZ, welcomed the investment, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to supporting Futurelife in its development journey while further developing a secure and functional industrial precinct.

Currently, the Dube Trade Port SEZ is home to 46 operational enterprises, which have generated a total of 10,803 jobs as of March 2023. The investment by Futurelife is expected to contribute to the continued growth and success of the SEZ, benefiting both the local economy and the wider community.
