The Department of Minerals and Energy announced on Tuesday that consumers will soon be paying more at the pump as the price of petrol, diesel, paraffin, and LP gas is set to increase.

Effective Wednesday, all grades of petrol will see a hike of 75 cents per litre, while diesel will increase by 70 to 73 cents per litre. Paraffin prices will also be on the rise, with an increase of 71 cents, and LP gas will go up by 37 cents per kilogram.

The department attributes the price increases to higher oil prices and decreased production in the United States. Additionally, the weakening of the rand against the dollar has also played a significant role in the price adjustments.

In response to the changes, the department stated, “In line with the provision of the self-adjusting slate levy mechanism rules, the slate levy on petrol and diesel will remain at 0 cents per litre with effect from the 7th February 2024.”
