Kromdraai, a community in the West Rand of Gauteng, has entered the digital age with the launch of free WIFI at Matla Combined School. This initiative, courtesy of the Gauteng Provincial Network (GPN) and the Gauteng Department of e-Government, aims to modernise government services and connect residents to the broader digital world.
Free WIFI in Kromdraai: Bridging the Digital Divide
On Sunday, the Gauteng Department of e-Government (e-Gov) unveiled the GPN WIFI, marking a significant step towards digital inclusivity. This initiative is part of the department’s broader mandate to roll out broadband connectivity across public facilities, including schools and hospitals, and provide free public WIFI to Gauteng communities.
Empowering Residents Through Connectivity
Bonginkosi Dhlamini, MEC for the Gauteng Department of e-Government, emphasised the transformative potential of this project. “The WIFI will ensure that Gauteng residents have free access to the internet, enabling them to participate in digital activities that can further their education, skills, and career prospects,” Dhlamini said.
Enhancing Service Access
Dhlamini highlighted the government’s vision of utilising technology to streamline service access. “Nowadays, we do not expect people to wait in long queues to access certain services that can easily be accessed online. This can only be achieved through the power of technology and connectivity,” he added.
Addressing Local Challenges
Mogale City Mayor, Danny Thupane, also attended the event and expressed optimism about the impact of the free WIFI. He noted that Kromdraai, being on the outskirts of the West Rand, has faced significant connectivity challenges. “We are very excited for this opportunity. It is not only the network that is an issue in these parts, but our people struggle with the ever-increasing prices of data,” Thupane said. He added that the project will enable residents to access the internet and participate in the digital world more effectively.
Enhancing Efficiency and Security
The GPN not only aims to connect communities but also to enhance the efficiency of service delivery. It eliminates unnecessary duplication of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) within the Gauteng provincial government, ensuring secure information systems.
Government’s Broader Connectivity Plans
This initiative aligns with the broader national strategy. In April this year, the Communications and Digital Technologies Department announced plans to connect 5.5 million households in rural and township areas to WIFI hotspots within the next three to four years.
