Free State’s Premier Soccer Event:

Edgar Legoale Foundation

Parys-Tumahole, Free State – The Edgar Legoale Foundation has officially announced the details for the 2025 Edgar Legoale Knockout Easter Soccer Tournament, an event that has become synonymous with community spirit, youth development, and soccer excellence in the Free State. Marking its seventh year, the tournament continues to captivate soccer enthusiasts while addressing critical social issues. This year’s theme, “SAY NO TO DRUGS, YES TO GOALS!”, underlines the foundation’s commitment to combating drug abuse and nurturing positive change within communities.

A Tournament with a Purpose

The 2025 edition of the Edgar Legoale Knockout Easter Soccer Tournament will take place from 18 to 21 April 2025 at the Mandela Sports Ground, located next to Boitlamo Secondary School in Parys-Tumahole, Free State. Matches will commence daily at 9 am, with 16 teams competing for a total prize pool of R65,000, broken down as follows:
• R50,000 for the champions,
• R10,000 for the runner-up, and
• R5,000 for the third-place finishers.

The tournament is more than just a soccer competition—it is a platform for raising awareness about the devastating effects of drug abuse, particularly among the youth. Recent statistics reveal alarming levels of substance abuse in South Africa, with communities across the Free State expressing growing concern. This tournament seeks to counter this trend by engaging young people in meaningful activities and fostering their athletic and personal growth.

Championing Social Responsibility

A unique aspect of the tournament is the requirement for the winning team to spearhead a drug awareness campaign in their respective community. This initiative ensures that the message of “SAY NO TO DRUGS, YES TO GOALS!” extends beyond the field, reaching schools, homes, and community spaces.

The foundation has taken a firm stance on enforcing this rule. A notable example is the permanent banishment of Jagermeisters FC from Vaal in 2023 after the team failed to fulfil their community campaign obligations. This decision highlights the Edgar Legoale Foundation’s unwavering dedication to its mission.

Building Role Models Through Soccer

Edgar Legoale, the foundation’s chairperson, emphasised the broader impact of the tournament:

“This tournament is more than a showcase of soccer skills; it’s a rallying cry to protect our youth from the clutches of drug abuse. We each play a crucial role: whether it’s waving a flag, scoring a goal, or cheering from the sidelines, every effort adds to the fi NVght against drug abuse. We are building not only athletes but role models, inspiring others to live drug-free lives.”

The foundation’s dedication to fostering role models is evident in its multifaceted approach. The tournament will feature:

• Inclusive soccer matches,
• Awareness workshops,
• Survivor stories,
• Expert guest speakers, and
• Community pledges against drug abuse.

Community and Sponsorship Support

The Edgar Legoale Foundation extended its gratitude to its longstanding partners, including Central News and Blaqsnaps Media, for their sponsorship and unwavering support. The foundation also called on businesses and community members to support the event through sponsorship and participation, highlighting the diverse benefits available through tailored sponsorship packages.

Additionally, the tournament invites local vendors—selling food, clothing, and other items—to set up stalls at the event free of charge. Details for vendor registration will be announced soon, ensuring broad community involvement.

A Legacy of Talent and Community Building

Since its inception, the Edgar Legoale Knockout Soccer Tournament has served as a platform for identifying and nurturing young soccer talent. It has consistently drawn the attention of soccer scouts eager to discover the next generation of South African stars. In 2025, the tournament promises to maintain its legacy while expanding its impact.

Community members and soccer enthusiasts can look forward to an unforgettable experience, uniting the love of sport with a shared commitment to fighting drug abuse. The foundation is also finalising plans for a Pre-Easter Soccer Tournament, with updates to follow.
