Lobby group AfriForum on Thursday will urgently approach the High Court in Bloemfontein to restore the water supply to the towns in the Matjhabeng, Nala and Maquassi Hills local municipalities.
This after striking workers at the Balkfontein Water Plant reportedly turned off the taps due to a wage dispute with the water board.
“We were notified yesterday of water shortages due to a notification sent out by Sedibeng Water, that there was a problem with their employees at Balkfontein Water Treatment plant striking, due to non-payment and labour issues happening at the moment,” says AfriForum’s Lambert de Klerk.
He says AfriForum sent an urgent letter to Sedibeng Water on 19 October to request them to restore the water supply but received no reply.
“We know that Sedibeng water released another notification that said there was an issue with the Matjhabeng local municipality on non-payment of their water accounts not being settled.
“Due to that Eskom notified Sedibeng Water that they will cut off electricity to that area as well due to the non-payment from Sedibeng water for the electricity that the used. Which is basically a snowball effect.” @jacarandanews
