Free State Sport Awards Deemed a Resounding Success

Free State Successfully Hosts Sports Awards

The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, in collaboration with the Free State Sport Federation, successfully organized and hosted the highly anticipated Free State Sport Award 2023. The event took place on Saturday at the prestigious URTH Conference Centre, located in Bayswater, Bloemfontein.

The ceremony commenced with an official address by the respected Free State Premier, Mxolisi Dukwana. Premier Dukwana emphasized the importance of the department directors understanding their roles and providing unwavering support to the various sporting codes, not only during times of victory. He pledged his commitment to allocating sufficient budgetary resources to promote both sports and economic development within the province. Premier Dukwana also expressed his concern regarding the government’s tendency to prioritize only health and education in budget allocations.

The Free State Sport Award 2023 recognized and honored outstanding individuals and organizations who have contributed significantly to the field of sports. The deserving winners of the different categories are as follows:

1. Sports Administrator of the Year:
Christa Roestoff, representing Triathlon/Duathlon

2. Sportsman of the Year:
Bohlokwa Khitsane, a remarkable talent in Karate

3. Sportsman of the Year with a Disability:
Karabo Cassius Morapedi, excelling in the sport of Boccia

4. Sportswoman of the Year:
Taheera Augousti, an exceptional player in Hockey

5. Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability:
Louzanne Coetzee and Guides, shining in Para Athletics

6. Team of the Year:
Buffalo Football Club, a force to be reckoned with in Football

7. Newcomer of the Year:
Leandi Prinsloo, showcasing promise in Aquatics

8. Coach of the Year:
Zachous Nechodemus Banyane, a driving force in Karate

9. Volunteer of the Year:
Mosoeu Mosoeu, making a difference in Table Tennis

10. Indigenous Games Star of the Year:
Rathuso Thulani Prince, a true master of Intonga

11. Provincial Federation of the Year:
Free State Cricket Union, achieving remarkable success

12. Recreation Body of the Year:
Heidedal Park Run, promoting recreational activities

13. Journalist of the Year:
Lebohang Pharoe, from 1 Free State TV

14. School team of the Year:
Oranje Meisieskool: Hockey 1st Team, displaying excellence in Hockey

15. Developing School Team of the Year:
Ikaheng Zakheng Secondary School: Netball Team, a rising talent in Netball

Additionally, the People’s Choice Award went to Bohlokoa Khitsane for his outstanding achievements in Karate. The MEC Awards Excellence Award honored Martha Mosoahle, Tshilwane Johannes Sonopo, Matshediso Mokatsane, and Nelson Stock for their exceptional contributions. Constance “Tsatsa” Monyobo and Dan Kgothule received the Lifetime Award for their remarkable dedication and impact in the field of sports. Judah Ntaje and Joseph Tshabalala were posthumously awarded for their significant contributions.
