Bloemfontein – In a bold move against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), the Premier of the Free State, MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae, will participate in the “March for Justice” today. This significant event is organized by various societal sectors and associations and aims to raise awareness and demand action against GBVF.

Setjhaba Maphalla, spokesperson for the Free State Provincial Government, announced, “Particularly, the march is convened following the gruesome killing of Judith Mpho Moalusi (41), reportedly at the hands of a boyfriend, on Sunday, 16 June 2024.”

A Unified Stand Against GBVF

Premier Letsoha-Mathae has been outspoken about the urgent need for a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of gender-based violence. “Government must take a posture of zero-tolerance towards abuse, and condemn all forms of gender-based violence,” expressed Letsoha-Mathae. She further emphasized the necessity for all societal sectors to unite in this struggle. “We call on all sectors of society to commit to ending GBVF in all its forms.”

While many forms of abuse, including economic abuse, blesser syndrome, illegal labour practices, emotional abuse, and physical abuse, persist at alarming rates, the Premier insists that a consolidated effort between the government and society is crucial to ending GBVF. “All South Africans must act to prevent abuse and to ensure a safer society for women and children. Government alone cannot eradicate this scourge which necessitates all sectors of society to come together in partnership of creating safer communities. Gender-based violence is a societal issue, and must be addressed by all sectors of society,” Letsoha-Mathae added.

The “March for Justice” will proceed as follows:

  • Starting Point: Hoffman Square, Bloemfontein
