Matshediso Setai
By Thabo Mosia
Free State Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae has appointed Matshediso Setai as her Spokesperson and Media Liaison Officer, effective Monday, 2 December 2024. This strategic move aims to bolster the province’s communication efforts and ensure that government initiatives are effectively communicated to the public.
Setjhaba Maphalla, Acting Head of Communication for the Free State Provincial Government, announced the appointment on Thursday , emphasizing its significance in enhancing engagement between the government, stakeholders, and the public. He stated, “Ms. Setai’s role is pivotal in advancing the mandate of the 7th Administration to heighten engagement between Government, stakeholders, and the public while managing and safeguarding the Administration’s narrative.”
In her new capacity, Setai will act as the essential link between the Premier’s Political Office and Government Communication Services. Her responsibilities include supporting the Premier’s communication strategy, organizing media engagements, and promoting transparency and accountability in public initiatives. She will also collaborate closely with the administrative communication team to ensure cohesive and unified government messaging.
Acting Premier Jabu Mbalula expressed confidence in Setai’s appointment, noting, “Ms. Matshediso Setai’s appointment as Spokesperson is a vital step in strengthening the Premier’s communication agenda. Her expertise will enhance the credibility and consistency of our messaging, fostering greater trust and understanding between Government and the people we serve.”
Setai brings a wealth of experience as a strategic communicator and development communications specialist, with a strong background in public relations, media relations, and integrated communications across both public and private sectors. Her proven track record is expected to enhance the government’s capacity to respond proactively to communication needs, ensuring consistency and credibility in public engagements.
This appointment comes at a time when Premier Letsoha-Mathae’s administration is under scrutiny. Recent reports have highlighted allegations of corruption involving the Premier and her husband, Lawrence Mathae, related to bribery claims during her tenure as MEC for Community Safety, Roads, and Transport. The Hawks are investigating these allegations, which have led to calls from opposition parties for her resignation.
Amid these challenges, Premier Letsoha-Mathae has taken a leave of absence, citing health reasons. During her absence, Acting Premier Jabu Mbalula has assumed her duties. The appointment of Setai as Spokesperson is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the administration’s communication efforts during this period.
The Free State Provincial Government is confident that Setai’s expertise will significantly enhance the impact and reach of its communications, reinforcing the Premier’s commitment to a responsive and accessible provincial government.
