Bloemfontein, 15 July 2024 – Premier of the Free State province, Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, convened a meeting with three key Free State government entities at OR Tambo House in Bloemfontein on Monday. The meeting, attended by senior provincial officials, aimed to chart a path towards financial stability, address operational challenges, and improve governance standards across these institutions.

Free State government spokesperson, Setjhaba Maphalla, said that the primary goal of the meeting was to conduct a comprehensive assessment of governance standards, identifying areas needing urgent corrective measures. “The engagement also aimed to bolster the province’s economic outlook, attract investments, foster a culture of robust governance, and revive financial viability across these institutions,” said Maphalla.

The entities in focus during the meeting included the Free State Development Corporation (FDC), the Maluti-A-Phofung Special Economic Zone, and the Free State Gambling, Liquor, and Tourism Authority. Each entity plays a crucial role in driving economic growth and development within the province.

• Free State Development Corporation (FDC): Tasked with supporting SMMEs, manufacturing, trade, and investment facilitation, the FDC aims to spearhead economic growth.
• Maluti-A-Phofung Special Economic Zone: Focused on attracting foreign investments and stimulating local economies, particularly in the Maluti-A-Phofung region.
• Free State Gambling, Liquor, and Tourism Authority: Mandated to regulate and develop the liquor and gambling sectors, thereby driving economic growth.

Premier Letsoha-Mathae was joined by MEC for Finance, Tourism, and Economic Development, Ketso Makume, Director-General Kopung Ralikontsane, and HOD for Economic Development, Mbulelo Nokwequ. The presence of these senior officials underscored the importance of the meeting and the commitment to addressing the challenges facing these entities.

During the meeting, Premier Letsoha-Mathae emphasized the necessity for these entities to achieve self-sufficiency and generate their own income streams. “As the Free State Provincial Government, our priority is the welfare of our people. We aim for these entities to excel, creating job opportunities and demonstrating value for public investments,” she affirmed.

Accountability in management roles was a key theme, with the Premier stressing, “High salaries must be justified by performance. It’s crucial that our expenditures yield tangible results. We owe it to our province to ensure transparency and efficiency.”
