Free State Premier, Mxolisi Dukwana, and Education MEC, Makalo Mohale Welcoming New SGB Members in Welkom
By Thabo Mosia | At a gathering at Kingdom Ministries, Dagbreek, Welkom, on Saturday, 18 May 2024, around 1,500 newly elected School Governing Body (SGB) members were warmly welcomed by Free State Premier Mxolisi Dukwana and Education MEC Makalo Mohale, marking the commencement of their term.
This inauguration ceremony not only celebrated the beginning of a new chapter for the SGBs but also paid tribute to the outgoing cohort of 2021-2024, acknowledging their contributions towards enhancing the educational landscape in the province.
Education MEC, Makalo Mohale, emphasised the critical role SGBs play in ensuring effective governance within schools, highlighting their responsibility towards fostering a collaborative environment and improving school performance. The ceremony served as both an induction for the new members and a gesture of appreciation towards the efforts of the predecessors.
The event witnessed an emotional lift when Premier Dukwana requested a song from the attending crowd before his address. A deep baritone voice led the assembly in the hymn ‘Ngibeke lapho uthanda khona Nkosi’, evoking a shared spirit of unity and purpose among those present. This heartfelt moment illustrated the Premier’s connectivity with cultural roots and set the tone for his subsequent, passionate speech.
Premier Dukwana, in his address, outlined the weight of responsibility that comes with being part of the SGB, framing it as an opportunity to mould the youth for a better future. “Being a great leader is allowing people a chance to become the best version of themselves,” he remarked, urging SGB members to embrace their roles proactively and collaboratively. His speech, filled with calls for hope, openness, and illumination, resonated well with the attendees, drawing widespread acclaim.
During the ceremony, SGB members and officials also participated in a commitment pledge, promising to abide by regulations aimed at enhancing efficiency and stability within schools. With a term of three years ahead of them, Premier Dukwana’s parting message encouraged the newly elected SGB to aim for a lasting impact, inspiring them to transform schools into centres of excellence.
