Free State Police Seek Community Assistance to Identify Two Unidentified Men Found Deceased in Virginia

**FREE STATE COMMUNITY URGED TO HELP IDENTIFY TWO DECEASED MEN FOUND IN VIRGINIA**

**Virginia, Free State** – The Free State Police are calling on the community for assistance in tracing the relatives of two unidentified men, whose decomposed bodies were found in separate locations in Virginia at different times this year.

The first body was discovered by a shepherd at the Saaiplaas slime dam on the afternoon of Thursday, 26 January 2023. Following the shepherd’s alert to authorities, the police promptly arrived at the scene. Captain Stephen Thakeng, a spokesperson for the Police, detailed the unsettling find: “Upon arrival, the Police were met with the deceased, an African male in a state of decomposition, clad only in physical training shorts and no shoes, approximately 1,7 meters tall, and bald. The man’s complexion was indiscernible due to the condition of the body.”

The second grim discovery was made at the Tikwe River Bridge on Sunday, 03 September 2023, by an individual who had visited the area to pray. At around 11:40, they noticed the lifeless body and immediately informed law enforcement. The deceased, another African male, was found wearing black jeans, a green Springbok t-shirt, and was barefoot. Described as roughly 1,7 meters in height with short black hair, the man’s identity, similar to the first case, remains a mystery.

Both bodies are currently at the Government Mortuary in Welkom, waiting to be claimed. “To date, nobody has come forward to identify either of the deceased,” Captain Thakeng expressed with concern.

The Free State Police are turning to the community for support, hoping that someone will recognize the descriptions or know of missing persons matching them. Detective Constable Teboho Mohapi of the Virginia Detective Services is handling the investigations and urges anyone with information to come forward and contact him directly on 071 794 9665 or 082 455 6050.

Alternatively, community members who prefer to provide information anonymously can contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111, or use the My SAPS App to submit a tip-off.
