The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has moved quickly to address the public following a break-in at the Director of Public Prosecution’s office in the Free State.
The NPA Northern Cape regional spokesperson, Mojalefa Senokoatsane, confirmed that the break-in occurred during the early hours of Monday morning at the prosecutorial body’s Bloemfontein office.
According to Senokoatsane, the perpetrators managed to gain access to various offices within the building, including the Office of the DPP, offices of Deputy Directors of Public Prosecutions (DDPP), as well as other administrative offices. It was reported that four laptops and voice recorders were taken during the break-in.
However, Senokoatsane was quick to reassure the public that no sensitive information, dockets or files were compromised during the incident. He emphasized that the NPA has secure areas where critical information is stored and that these areas were not breached during the break-in.
Senokoatsane also made it clear that the NPA remains committed to carrying out its prosecutorial duties despite the setback. He stated, “The National Prosecuting Authority, even though shocked, disturbed, and disdained by these cowardly acts, will not be discouraged to continue prosecuting all cases without fear, favour, or prejudice.”
In response to the break-in, a case has been opened with the South African Police Service (SAPS). Senokoatsane expressed gratitude to the SAPS for their swift response and initiation of investigative procedures. He also encouraged members of the community to come forward with any information that may assist the ongoing investigation.
The NPA spokesperson reiterated that security measures at their offices are taken very seriously, with 24-hour security personnel on duty seven days a week. He emphasized that the break-in was an isolated incident and does not indicate a lapse in the overall security protocols at NPA offices.
Senokoatsane concluded by assuring the public that the NPA is cooperating fully with the SAPS-led investigation and remains committed to upholding the rule of law in the country.
