The Free State MEC of Education, Makalo Mohale, is urging parents to participate in the upcoming elections of School Governing Bodies (SGBs) at their children’s schools. The elections are scheduled to take place from 1-31 March 2024 across the Free State.
HOW TO VOTE AND/OR STAND FOR SGB-A PARENT’S STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
The 2024 school governing body (SGB) elections are taking place from 1 to 31 March 2024. Your participation in the governance of your child’s school is crucial.
It is how you ensure that the education your child receives does not undermine the beliefs and values you want- and have the right to instil in your child.
This is a general overview of the most important elements of SGB elections.
Our province will publish regulations in its provincial gazette stipulating exactly how its elections will be conducted.
The school provides the:
Notice of the date, time and place of the nomination and election meeting as well as the election and nomination process and requirements.
Nomination form.
Voters’ roll.
STEP 1: Ensure your name is on the voters’ roll.
If it is not, raise a dispute. You cannot vote or stand for SGB if your name is not on the roll.
If you want to stand for SGB, proceed to Step 2. If not, proceed to Step 3.
STEP 2: Lodge your duly completed nomination form.
Ensure your nomination form is properly completed. The school will validate the nominations and provide you with the nominations list. You can object to any nomination. You may need to attend a nomination meeting. The school will confirm the nomination process and requirements.
Whether you decide to stand for SGB or not, be sure to support other suitable candidates.
