Free State MEC Dr Mamiki Maboya to Launch Agricultural Multi Certification Program at Hendrik Potgieter School

Free State MEC Dr Mamiki Maboya is set to launch the Agricultural Multi Certification Program at Hendrik Potgieter Agricultural School in Reddersburg on Tuesday, 9 September 2025, with the initiative designed to empower learners with industry-recognised credentials in the agricultural sector alongside their National Senior Certificate.

Department of Education spokesperson Howard Ndaba announced that the program aims to better prepare 450 Grade 10 to 12 learners from 16 schools across the province for the workforce, offering SAQA-accredited certificates in Sheep Handling, Animal Health, and Good Management Practices, marking a significant step in bridging education and employability in agriculture.

Program Objectives and Benefits

The Agricultural Multi Certification Program is designed to empower learners with industry-recognised credentials in the agricultural sector. “Through this program, the department seeks to provide learners with additional SAQA-accredited certificates alongside the National Senior Certificate (NSC), ensuring that upon leaving school, they are better prepared for the world of work and positioned to pursue further qualifications in higher education.

“Currently, 450 learners in Grades 10, 11, and 12 from 16 schools across the province are benefitting from this program. They are enrolled in three specialised programmes and will receive certificates in: Sheep Handling, Animal Health, and Good Management.”

The current Grade 12 learners in this program will receive their three additional agricultural certificates with their NSC certificate at the Department’s annual Well Done Function next year.
This initiative aligns with South Africa’s broader efforts to enhance vocational education in agriculture, a sector contributing 2.4% to GDP but employing over 800,000 people, per 2024 Stats SA data. By integrating practical certifications, the program addresses skills gaps, boosting employability in a field facing labour shortages amid climate change and mechanisation.

Similar programs nationwide, like AgriSETA’s partnerships, have certified thousands, with success stories including graduates starting farms or joining agribusinesses. In Free State, agriculture employs 15% of the workforce, making this vital for rural development.

Event Details and Significance

Details of the event are as follows:
Date: 9 September 2025 Time: 10:00 Venue: Hendrik Potgieter Agricultural School, Reddersburg
The launch at Hendrik Potgieter, a specialised agricultural school, underscores the province’s commitment to rural education. Founded in 1963, the school offers practical training in farming, aligning with the program’s hands-on focus. MEC Maboya, appointed in June 2025, has prioritised skills development, noting in a July address that “education must equip youth for economic participation.” This event follows her engagements on school safety and infrastructure, reflecting a holistic approach.
