By Thys Khiba – The Hawks attached to Bethlehem Serious Commercial Crime Investigation have arrested a 50-year-old man who is running unregistered funeral scheme in Bethlehem in the Free State province.

The arrest comes after investigations by the Hawks into an illegal funeral scheme operating from Bethlehem took place.

Seven suspects have been arrested by the Hawks in connection with a crime ring responsible for prepaid electricity fraud.

An elderly Bohlokong woman lodged a complaint with the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) when the accused failed to pay funeral benefits despite a funeral cover been taken out and premiums paid religiously between 2017 and 2022.

The Free State spokesperson for the Hawks, Lieutenant Colonel Zweli Mohobeleli indicated an elderly woman was referred to the Hawks with further allegations that the funeral scheme was not recognised by any underwriting authority.

The accused is expected to appear in the Magistrate’s Court on 25 August 2023 on charges including fraud, theft, money laundering, and contravention of the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act 37 of 2002.

He was served with a summons yesterday, 25 July by members of the Hawks attached to Bethlehem Serious Commercial Crime Investigation,” said Mohobeleli.

The Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in the province, Major General Mokgadi Bokaba urged victims of such schemes in Free State to contact Detective Constable Lineo Ralejalla on 082

This is also a chance for victims of such schemes around Bethlehem, who may have been defrauded by the accused, to report the matter.
