The Free State Government, under the leadership of Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, has delivered on its promise to the victims of the Jagersfontein disaster by handing over 106 newly built homes. This significant milestone was marked on Wednesday, 14 August 2024, symbolizing a new beginning for those whose lives were devastated nearly two years ago.

On September 11, 2022, the community of Jagersfontein faced unimaginable loss when a tragedy struck the small town. The Jaggersfontein Development Mine’s tailings dam collapsed, releasing a destructive torrent of mud and water into the community. Homes were reduced to rubble, lives were shattered, and families were left in despair. The disaster claimed several lives and displaced hundreds of residents, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

Among the many affected was the Mtyingizane family from Itumeleng in Jagersfontein. Like many others, they faced the daunting challenge of rebuilding their lives from the ground up. Over 130 homes were destroyed, and the community was left grappling with the aftermath of the disaster.

On 14 August 2024, a ray of hope emerged as 24-year-old Xoliswa Mtyingizane, who had taken on the role of legal guardian to her four younger cousins, received a newly built home. Some of these children had lost their parents even before the mine wall collapse. The handover ceremony was led by Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, accompanied by MECs Dibolelo Mance (Public Works and Infrastructure), Saki Mokoena (Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs), and Human Settlements, as well as MEC for Community Safety, Roads, and Transport, Jabu Mbalula.

Xoliswa expressed her profound gratitude and relief: “I am overjoyed that we finally have a home of our own and will no longer need to search for shelter or pay rent.” She added, “Despite the challenges we faced, our government’s unwavering support helped us through. We are now ready to create new memories and leave the past behind.”

Premier Letsoha-Mathae, addressing the new homeowners, highlighted the significance of the day: “We have journeyed together through these trying times, and today marks a new chapter. This rebuilding and rehabilitation project, which exceeded one hundred million rand, was not just about physical reconstruction but also about restoring dignity and hope. Your patience and resilience have been inspiring.”

The Premier also emphasized the importance of the psychological support provided throughout this process, acknowledging the community’s strength and perseverance in the face of adversity. She further encouraged Xoliswa to return to school and assured her of continued support in her educational journey.

In total, 106 new homes were handed over to members of the disaster-stricken community, symbolizing a fresh start and a brighter future for all. These homes represent more than just shelter—they are a testament to the community’s resilience and the government’s commitment to rebuilding lives.

The Jagersfontein mudslide disaster, triggered by the collapse of a tailings dam following heavy rainfall, not only destroyed homes and businesses but also claimed several lives. The disaster left the community grappling with severe challenges, including water shortages and failing infrastructure, which further exacerbated the living conditions in the area.

Last year, the DA Councillor for Kopanong Local Municipality, Estelle Noordman, highlighted the ongoing struggles faced by the Jagersfontein community. Severe water shortages had plagued the area, with residents relying on water tanks and resorting to buying water at high prices. The community continued to suffer in makeshift shelters, and although some housing projects had started, many remained unfinished. The situation was compounded by a failing sewage system, making life unbearable, especially during the cold winter months.

Despite the challenges, the handover of these new homes marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to provide relief and support to the victims of the Jagersfontein disaster. Premier Letsoha-Mathae reaffirmed the province’s commitment to rebuilding and restoring hope in the community, stating, “The handover of these houses marks a significant milestone in our efforts to provide relief and support to the victims of the Jagersfontein mudslide disaster. We are committed to rebuilding and restoring hope in our communities.”
