Disagreement between the Matjhabeng Local Municipality and Sibanye-Stillwater mine has exposed lack of accountability after wastewater flows on to farmland in Welkom.

Matjhabeng Local Municipality

A 45-year-old woman is behind bars after being apprehended by the Hawks on charges of fraud and corruption, stemming from the Matjhabeng Local Municipality’s recent jobs-for-cash scandal. She is expected to stand before the Welkom Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 11 March 2024, for her alleged role in the duplicitous scheme that has shaken the community.

The suspect was arrested by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation during a sting operation in Welkom on Friday, 8 March 2024. Free State Police Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Zweli Mohobeleli confirmed the details of the arrest which unfolded after a 20-year-old job seeker found herself ensnared in the web of deceit.

“In February 2024, the Matjhabeng Local Municipality announced vacancies for trainee traffic officers and encouraged the public to apply,” Lieutenant Colonel Mohobeleli recounted. “One young applicant was overjoyed after receiving a call from a woman who, after confirming the receipt of her application, guaranteed her the job — but at a price: a payment of R10 000.”

The hopeful candidate, sensing foul play, reported the incident to the Welkom’s Serious Corruption Investigation unit. “The trap was set for the morning of 8 March at 8:00. The suspect believed she was meeting to collect the R10 000 payoff, but instead, she was met with our detectives ready to make the arrest,” Lieutenant Colonel Mohobeleli added.

It has been ascertained subsequent to the apprehension that the accused does not hold any position within the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, prompting further investigation into the matter to uncover any potential accomplices.

Brigadier Sophie Hange, Acting Provincial Head of the Hawks, applauded the community for their vigilance and assistance in exposing the fraudulent activity. “We are working diligently to determine the involvement of others in this scheme and the full scope of the suspect’s illicit activities. Let this serve as a reminder: government jobs are non-negotiable commodities. Those attempting to peddle influence and employment opportunities for cash will face the full might of the law,” Brigadier Hange solemnly warned.
