Four Suspects Arrested After High-Speed Shootout with Gauteng Police

Gauteng Police Arrested 4 Suspects

Johannesburg – Gauteng police have arrested four men linked to a series of house robberies in the province. The suspects, aged from 44 to 49, were apprehended Wednesday in Cyrildene, Johannesburg, after a high-speed chase and shootout with police officers.

The suspects were in possession of illegally acquired firearms, ammunition, a stolen motor vehicle, and housebreaking tools at the time of their capture. The fierce exchange of gunfire resulted in two of the suspects sustaining injuries, and they are now receiving treatment in hospital under police guard. The other two men were detained unharmed.

“Police attached to Johannesburg Flying Squad received a lookout for a silver Renault Clio with males who are suspected to be involved in a number of house robberies in Gauteng. The police spotted the vehicle driving at Cyrildene and activated the blue light and siren to stop it, but suspects accelerated and started shooting at the police,” explained Police Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo.

He further detailed the chaotic scene. “The police returned fire, and the suspects’ vehicle collided with two vehicles that belong to members of the community. During the shootout, two of the suspects were shot while the other two were cornered and arrested. None of police officers were injured.”

Continuing, Lieutenant Colonel Masondo added, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle driven by the suspects and the firearms were taken from the owners during robberies around Gauteng.”
