BLOEMFONTEIN – Free State police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Covane, confirmed the arrest of four suspects, aged between 20 and 41, during the early hours of today. The suspects were apprehended while preparing and packaging dagga intended for distribution at various schools and institutions of higher learning in Bloemfontein.

The arrests took place following intelligence gathered by the Mangaung Metro Tactical Response Team, which identified a drug supplier operating from a unit at White Flats in Brandwag, near Bloemfontein. According to Lieutenant Colonel Covane, the unit had been under surveillance, and the team moved in on the suspects at approximately 01:30 this morning.

“A search was conducted, and a firearm with four live rounds of ammunition was found hidden between mattresses where the 21-year-old suspect sleeps. The unit is used as a storage facility for dagga, where the drug is prepared and packaged before being distributed,” stated Lieutenant Colonel Covane.

During the raid, the police seized 62.55 kilograms of dagga, which had been rolled into joints, packaged in various sizes of zip-lock plastic bags, and stored loosely in containers. The estimated street value of the confiscated dagga is R1.5 million. The four suspects, originally from Bloemfontein, Botshabelo, and Thaba Nchu, were arrested at the scene. Additionally, Khokha speed points used for electronic payments and cash believed to be proceeds from drug sales were also confiscated.

A case of dealing in drugs has been opened at Parkweg Police Station. The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court soon.
