FOUR ARRESTED FOR COPPER CABLE THEFT ON N1 KROONSTAD

Kroonstad Police have arrested Four suspects on N1 North for possession of stolen cables on Friday, 31 December 2021 about 06:00 in the morning. 

“The members Sgt Serame Malebo and Warrant officer Kgope Molefi were doing Crime Prevention duties patrolling on N1. “said , Captain Malebo Khosana

“A white Toyota Hilux bakkie passed them moving to the same direction. They suspected the way the driver was looking at them through his rear view mirror. They decided to tail the bakkie from Retief until then they flagged it to stop near the Weighbridge.”

“After stopping Sgt Malebo approached the driver while WO Molefi went for the passenger. As they approached it, they noticed other two passengers seated at the back of the bakkie with a canopy sitting on top of a sail. “

“The driver was asked about the load and he said it is copper cable. The driver and three passengers were arrested for possession of stolen copper. “

“The copper cable belonging to Transnet is believed to have been stolen in Bloemfontein to be ferried to Gauteng Province. “

“The copper cables weighed 40 kg for Catanury and Contact was 654 kg all to the estimated street value of about  R109 111.000.  These cables and a bakkie were confiscated by the police. It was revealed that the bakkie was rented from one of the car rentals. “

The four male suspects aged between 18 and 35 are due in the Kroonstad Magistrate’s Court where they will face charges of being in possession of stolen goods.
