Umkhonto WeSizwe Commemoration in Pietermaritzburg

Former President Jacob Zuma is set to lead the Umkhonto WeSizwe commemoration of the newly formed MK Party, honoring the legacies of Moses Mabhida and Johnny Makhathini in Pietermaritzburg tomorrow (Saturday).

Zuma’s recent announcement of not casting his vote for the governing party in the upcoming general elections and instead supporting the MK Party to save the ANC has caused a stir.

He has been actively campaigning for the newly formed political party and was a prominent figure at a recent MK Party event in Verulam, north of Durban. Despite heavy rain, the event at Mzo Lifestyle was packed with about 300 people who came to hear Zuma speak.

Both Mabhida and Makhathini are buried at the Slangspruit Gravesite in Pietermaritzburg, and the event aims to pay tribute to these political giants.

Zuma’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma, revealed that her father will be celebrating his commander’s centenary and will be accompanied by the Mabhida family.

Moses Mabhida and Johnny Makhathini were influential figures in the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa and were closely associated with the African National Congress (ANC). They, along with Zuma, spent time in exile in Mozambique in the 1980s and worked together to organize and mobilize support for the fight against apartheid.

Despite the challenges they faced in exile, Mabhida, Makhathini, and Zuma remained committed to their mission and worked tirelessly to build international support for the ANC and establish networks of support for their cause.
