Former president Jacob Zuma turned himself into prison early Thursday to begin serving a 15-month sentence for contempt of the country's highest court, officials said.

The Department of correctional services has confirmed that Former President Jacob Zuma will remain in hospital after he underwent a surgical procedure on Saturday , 14 August 2021.

The Former President is currently serving a 15 Months Jail Sentence at Estcourt Correctional Services for failing to appear at state capture inquiry. He was admitted two weeks ago to an outside hospital for medical observation.

Department of correctional services says it is unable to predict a discharge date as priority is for Mr Zuma to be afforded the best care possible.

“As inmates are placed in correctional centres involuntarily, the state has a total and inescapable responsibility and duty to care for them in a manner that does not violate or compromise their constitutional rights, which include access to healthcare.

“We appeal to all people to refrain from speculating on the health of Mr Zuma and allow medical practitioners space to continue providing quality healthcare to him.”
