Correctional Services Commissioner, Makgothi Thobale, has announced that former President Jacob Zuma briefly returned to prison for processing at Escourt Prison today at 6am.

However, he was subsequently released on special remission.

According to the commissioner, Zuma underwent the necessary administrative procedures and was granted parole through the remission process approved by President Cyril Ramaphosa for all other offenders.

This development follows earlier events where the Constitutional Court dismissed an attempt to challenge the Supreme Court of Appeal’s ruling on Zuma’s medical parole. As a result, Zuma was obligated to return to prison.

Furthermore, the Pretoria High Court reviewed and overturned former Correctional Services Commissioner Arthur Fraser’s decision to grant Zuma medical parole in December 2021.

Despite subsequent failed appeals by the commissioner’s office in the Supreme Court of Appeal and the recent dismissal of their plea by the Constitutional Court, the ruling requiring Zuma’s return to prison still stands.

Both the commissioner’s office and Zuma personally sought intervention from the Constitutional Court, but their appeal was swiftly dismissed due to its lack of reasonable prospects of success.
