LAGOS, Nigeria – Chidimma Adetshina, a former contestant in the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant, has been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, despite ongoing investigations into her citizenship by South African authorities. This victory comes after a tumultuous period marked by public scrutiny and legal probes, highlighting the complexities surrounding her South African citizenship and Nigerian heritage.
Background and Controversy
Chidimma Adetshina’s journey to the Miss Universe Nigeria crown began with her participation in the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant. However, her path was derailed when the Department of Home Affairs launched an investigation into her South African citizenship following allegations that her mother had committed identity fraud. The investigation revealed that Adetshina’s mother allegedly assumed the identity of a South African woman in Tshwane in 1982, which raised questions about Adetshina’s eligibility to represent South Africa on an international stage .
The controversy intensified when it was discovered that Adetshina’s mother might have used fraudulent means to register her daughter’s birth in South Africa. This prompted the Miss South Africa organisers, alongside the Department of Home Affairs, to conduct a thorough investigation. Amidst rising xenophobic sentiments and media attention, Adetshina voluntarily withdrew from the Miss South Africa contest, citing concerns for her safety and well-being .
A New Beginning in Nigeria
Despite the controversy in South Africa, Adetshina’s journey took a positive turn when she received an invitation from the organisers of Miss Universe Nigeria. The pageant, which took place in Lagos, welcomed Adetshina as a contestant, allowing her to represent her father’s homeland on an international stage. The decision to invite Adetshina was historic, as it was the first time the Miss Universe Nigeria organisers had extended such an invitation to a contestant of mixed heritage amidst ongoing nationality disputes .
Adetshina’s participation in Miss Universe Nigeria was met with both support and skepticism. While some critics questioned her eligibility, others praised the organisers for recognizing her Nigerian roots and giving her a chance to shine on the global stage. The organisers clarified that Adetshina underwent the same rigorous screening as other contestants and was not given any preferential treatment .
Upon winning the Miss Universe Nigeria crown, Adetshina expressed her gratitude and relief. “This journey has been a tough journey for me, and I am so proud of myself. I’m really grateful for the love and support I’ve received,” she told reporters after the event. Adetshina’s victory is seen as a triumph over adversity, and she is now set to represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico later this year .
