Former Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, is scheduled to appear in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Palm Ridge on Wednesday, 21 August 2024. This marks another chapter in his ongoing legal battle where he faces serious corruption charges linked to alleged bribes totaling over R1.6 million.

Kodwa’s legal troubles stem from accusations that during his tenure as ANC spokesperson and a member of the party’s National Executive Committee, he accepted bribes from former EOH Holdings executive, Jehan Mackay. The payments, reportedly made between April 2015 and February 2016, were allegedly in exchange for influencing lucrative state tenders in favour of Mackay’s company. The case is a significant fallout from the State Capture Commission of Inquiry, which highlighted the close, and allegedly corrupt, relationship between Kodwa and Mackay.

Kodwa and Mackay were arrested in June 2024 after turning themselves in and were subsequently released on R30,000 bail each. Shortly after his first court appearance on 5 June 2024, Kodwa resigned from his ministerial position but later returned as a Member of Parliament. Despite the gravity of the charges, both Kodwa and Mackay have maintained their innocence, insisting that the financial transactions were merely personal loans between friends, unrelated to any government contracts.

During previous court appearances, the defence, led by advocate Zola Majavu, requested further particulars from the state to better prepare for the trial. The state, represented by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), has indicated that it is ready to proceed with the case, having completed its investigation. The court has been dealing with several interlocutory matters, including the defence’s requests for additional information, which has led to multiple postponements.
