With the looming grace period for the renewal of driving licences, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has encouraged drivers to renew their licences, as there will be no further extension to the licence validity.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has announced that it will not pursue charges against former Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Fikile Mbalula regarding his family holiday in Dubai.

This decision comes in response to the Public Protector’s report from December 2019, which recommended that the NPA investigate allegations that Sedgars Sports funded the Mbalula family’s trip to Dubai while Mbalula served as Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture.

The Public Protector’s referral called for an examination of whether the holiday was connected to money laundering and urged the prosecution of any individuals involved in criminal activities. As a result, a police docket was registered at Brooklyn police station under the reference CAS 158/08/2019.

Following thorough investigations led by Pretoria’s Specialised Commercial Crime Unit and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) office, the NPA has determined that there is insufficient evidence to support the allegations of criminal activity in this case. Consequently, the decision has been made to decline prosecution for anyone connected to the matter.

The NPA stated, “After police investigations, guided by the prosecutors in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crime Unit office, and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) office, a decision to decline to prosecute anyone in this matter was taken, as there is no evidence supporting allegations of criminal activity.” This decision was announced on Wednesday.
