Former Metsimaholo Local Municipality executive mayors, councilor Selloane Motjeane of the Economic Freedom Fighters(EFF) and councilor Lindiwe Tshongwe of the African National Congress (ANC) have been officially appointed as the members of the Mayoral Committee by mayor Jack Malindi.
Tshongwe is appointed as the MMC for Finance & IDP while Motjeane is the new Organisational Development and Corporate Services MMC.
“In terms of Section 60 of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, Act 117 of 1998, the Executive Mayor is required to appoint members of the Mayoral Committee in order to assist him to play effective and efficient oversight over the administration of the municipality by ensuring provision of quality services on a sustainable basis to all residents of Metsimaholo Local Municipality,” said Municipal spokesperson Dr Gino Alberts.
Malindi has requested residents and stakeholders of the municipality to support his committee.
The appointed MMCs will be held to a high standard of accountability.
Below is the list of councillors of Metsimaholo appointed as MMCs:
The African Independent Congress (AIC) councillor Malindi is the third executive mayor of Metsimaholo to be elected withinthree years.
A coalition government in South Africa has proven to be a nightmare as political parties find it challenging to work together due to their ideological differences.
Malindi was elected unopposed during a special council sitting at the Harry Gwala Multipurpose Centre, in Zamdela at Sasolburg.
He was nominated by the African Transformation Movement (ATM) and the nomination was seconded by the ANC.
The municipal spokesperson Dr Gino Alberts confirmed all political parties, including ANC, DA, EFF, AIC, ATM, MCA, FFP, represented in the council were present during Wednesday’s council sitting.
His election comes after the ANC supported by the EFFremoved DA’s councillor Jeff Zwane through a motion of no confidence on 01 August 2023.
The motion brought by the ANC was supported by 31 councillors. The DA councillors led by their national and provincial leaders, Helen Zille and Dr Roy Jankielsohn staged a walked out during the meeting.
Zwane has been accused of corruption, fraud, money laundering on procurement of the security services rendered by security company Isidingo.
Meanwhile, five senior officials, that includes Chief Financial Officer, Technical Director, Director of Planning and LED, and Social Services of Metsimaholo have been suspended following the allegations of involvement in allegedly appointing a security tender.
