Former KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu has officially resigned from the African National Congress (ANC), marking the end of his long-standing affiliation with the party. His resignation, announced on 4 October 2024, comes after more than four decades of service to the ANC, during which he played a pivotal role in the political landscape of KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.
Mchunu, who had served as premier from 2016 to 2019, stated that his departure was driven by a sense of disillusionment and a feeling that he no longer added value to the party. In his resignation letter, Mchunu expressed disappointment with the current state of the ANC and its inability to address pressing challenges. He also lamented the party’s internal divisions and its direction under the Government of National Unity (GNU), which he has been critical of in the past.
“I have, in fact, lost hope,” Mchunu said in a candid statement. He added that his contributions to the ANC had diminished, and he felt it was time to step aside. Mchunu’s resignation has sparked widespread discussion, particularly because of his high-profile role in provincial governance and his history of loyalty to the party .
Disillusionment with the GNU
Mchunu’s resignation follows his public criticism of the GNU, which was formed as a coalition government after the 2024 national elections. The former premier has been vocal about his concerns regarding the GNU’s leadership and its failure to address the country’s socio-economic challenges. Mchunu’s disappointment with the direction the ANC has taken under the GNU reflects broader dissatisfaction among some senior party members who believe the coalition has compromised the ANC’s ability to govern effectively .
