Former Mayor of Johannesburg, Mpho Phalatse, has announced her resignation as a councillor for the Democratic Alliance (DA), effective from September 30, 2023.
Phalatse, a qualified medical doctor with extensive experience in healthcare, plans to return to the healthcare sector to make a meaningful and invaluable contribution.
The decision comes after months of reflection and consultation with her family. Phalatse stated, “The changing political and economic climate have necessitated that I embark on a process of introspection and reflection regarding my future as a councillor. As a medical professional, I believe I can better serve the community and save lives outside of politics.”

Phalatse has been a councillor in the city of Johannesburg for the past seven years, initially serving as MMC for health and social development. Her commitment to improving healthcare services and social development in Johannesburg has been commendable throughout her tenure.
In November 2021, Phalatse was elected as the executive mayor of Johannesburg, only to be removed from the position earlier this year after a vote of no confidence. However, she remained resilient in her role as leader of the opposition, continuing to advocate for the interests of the citizens.
