Former Joburg Speaker Colleen Makhubele and Energy Expert Adil Nchabeleng
By Nkosana Khumalo
The MK Party has appointed former Johannesburg council speaker Colleen Makhubele and Bapedi crown prince Adil Nchabeleng as Members of Parliament (MPs). The party announced that the two will be sworn in by Parliament on 28 January 2025.
Colleen Makhubele’s Political Journey
Colleen Makhubele, an accomplished public servant, has held several significant positions, including Speaker of Council and Chair of Chairs at the City of Johannesburg, Chairperson of the Board for the Metropolitan Trading Company, and Non-Executive Director and Board Chair of the South African Post Office (SAPO). Her memberships in the Institute of Directors South Africa and the HCL Foundation Trust further highlight her dedication to ethical governance and public service. In August 2024, Makhubele resigned from the South African Rainbow Alliance (SARA), a party she formed after her departure from the Congress of the People (COPE), to join the MK Party. She stated that the MK Party has become a “beacon of hope to unite and rally African leaders and their people.”
Adil Nchabeleng’s Expertise and Vision
Crown Prince Adil Nchabeleng, a prince of the Pedi Tribe, is a leading energy expert with a dynamic blend of heritage and modernity. He has demonstrated excellence in multiple fields, including project management, ICT entrepreneurship, investment banking, and as head of Transform RSA. His active role in the MK Party’s National High Command and Economic Transformation Committee positions him as a champion for socio-economic reforms and sustainable development. His insights and expertise will be instrumental in shaping a prosperous and equitable future for South Africa.
MK Party’s Commitment to Transformative Leadership
MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela expressed confidence in the new appointees, stating, “The MK Party has high expectations for these leaders as they embark on their parliamentary journey, and we wish them well. Both are tasked with advancing the MK Party’s vision of radical socioeconomic transformation, prioritising policies that address land expropriation without compensation, youth empowerment, and energy security. Their presence in Parliament will amplify the voices of the marginalised, ensuring the MK Party remains a formidable force for justice and economic freedom.”
A Growing Political Movement
The MK Party, led by former President Jacob Zuma, has been attracting several high-profile political figures. In recent months, former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) deputy president Floyd Shivambu and former DA member Bongani Baloyi joined the MK Party, dissolving their respective parties to align with the MKP’s vision. This trend signifies a consolidation of political forces aiming to bring about transformative change in South Africa.
