Introduction:
Sizwe Mbalo, the former Deputy Speaker of the Free State Legislature, has passed away at the age of 55. His death on 21 August 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer, marks the end of a significant chapter in the province’s political and community leadership. The news has been met with an outpouring of tributes from political figures and community members who admired his lifelong commitment to public service.
A Life of Service:
Sizwe Mbalo’s career in public service was marked by his unwavering dedication to improving the lives of those around him, particularly within the Free State province. Beginning his political activism in the mid-1980s, he quickly rose through the ranks of various organizations committed to fighting apartheid and building a democratic South Africa. His early involvement with the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) and the Tumahole Youth Congress set the stage for his later contributions as a member of the South African Youth Congress (SAYCO) and the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL).
Following South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994, Mbalo served in several key roles, including as the Chairperson of the Parys Transitional Local Council and the Ngwathe Local Municipality. His leadership was further demonstrated during his tenure as Speaker of the Fezile Dabi District Municipality and Deputy Speaker of the Free State Legislature. Most recently, Mbalo served as an advisor to the Premier of the Free State, where his expertise continued to shape provincial policies.
Community and Political Contributions:
In addition to his official roles, Mbalo was an active member of the ANC’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) and other civic organizations. His commitment to social justice and community development was evident in his work with the ANC Regional Executive Committee in Fezile Dabi, where he held various leadership positions, including Regional Chairperson. Mbalo’s efforts in rebuilding ANC structures and fostering unity within the party were widely recognized and appreciated.
Condolences and Tributes:
The Mbalo family expressed their deep gratitude for the support and love they have received during this difficult time. According to family spokesperson Tefo Ganafana, “Sizwe Mbalo was more than just a public servant; he was a brother, a humble community builder, a dedicated leader, and most importantly, a loving husband and father.” Mbalo leaves behind his wife, Tswelopele Sinothemba Mbalo, their three sons and daughter, and his extended family, who will continue to honor his legacy.
Upcoming Arrangements:
The family will announce funeral or memorial arrangements in due course and has requested privacy as they mourn their loss.
