Tito Mboweni

Johannesburg – Tito Mboweni, South Africa’s former finance minister and South African Reserve Bank (SARB) governor, has passed away at the age of 65 after a short illness. Mboweni, widely recognized for his contributions to South Africa’s economic stability, was surrounded by family at the time of his passing on Saturday night.

The Mboweni family released a statement expressing their devastation and requesting privacy during this difficult time. According to the statement, Mboweni succumbed to a brief illness while receiving treatment in Johannesburg .

A Pioneer in South African Finance

Mboweni was appointed as the first Black governor of the SARB in 1999, succeeding Chris Stals. His tenure was marked by major economic reforms, positioning him as a transformative leader in South Africa’s post-apartheid economy. Mboweni’s decade-long service as SARB governor was characterized by a focus on maintaining financial stability, which was crucial during a period of global economic change. He also served as the Minister of Labour in Nelson Mandela’s Cabinet, helping to shape labor policies that would benefit the newly democratic nation .

Legacy of Leadership

Following his governorship, Mboweni was appointed as the Minister of Finance in 2018, where he continued to play a vital role in addressing South Africa’s economic challenges. Known for his pragmatic approach, he often used social media to communicate directly with the public, offering insights into his decisions and occasionally stirring controversy. His tenure as finance minister was marked by efforts to balance fiscal discipline with the need to support economic growth, particularly in the face of persistent budget deficits and slow growth .

Looking Ahead

While the family has requested privacy, they have indicated that further details regarding memorial arrangements will be shared in the coming days.

“And really this responds to the dire situation in which most of our people have found themselves, said Finance Minister Tito Mboweni. “If you drive around the country or walk around the country, you are bound to notice the extreme poverty in which our people live.”
